As the year draws to a close, often we find ourselves contemplating the year that has gone before, and how we might start the year ahead.
Start out with a Freewrite. This is a fabulous way to unblock your brain of the background noise, and tap into our internal monologue. Set your alarm for two minute intervals and don’t take your pen off the page in response to the following prompts:
This year will be a year of…
Before this year ends, I will…
A new start, a chance to…
Describe the past year using only colours…
I found the following two poems, and I feel that they differ slightly in tone. Let’s take a look at them.
Both poems consider the year that has come to an end in contrast to the vast void of time that opens up.
As one thing ends, of course another begins. Such is the nature of a cycle. List 5 of your favourite things from the past year. It might be something as small as coming home to the smell of cooking, finding something you thought you’d lost, or keeping your houseplant alive.
Make a poem where each stanza focuses on each of your points.
